The Virtues of Al Madinah

1The Messenger of Allah (saw) made a number of supplications for Madinah and it’s inhabitants. Allah subhana wa ta ‘alaa mentions in Qur’an one of the supplications of our beloved Messenger (saw):

“My Lord! Let my entry (to the city) be good, and (likewise) my exit (from the city) be good.” [Al Isra’ 17:80]

On the authority of Anas bin Malik (as), who heard the Messenger (saw) say: “Oh Allah! Bestow upon Al Madinah twice the blessings which you bestowed upon Makkah.” [Al Bukhary and Al Muslim]

On the authority of Aa’ishah (ra), who said that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Oh Allah! Make Al madinah beloved to us, as we love Makkah- or more. Oh Allah! Make it conductive to health, and bless us in its Sa and its Mudd (units of measure) and transfer its fever to Al Juhfah.” [Al Bukhary and Al Muslim]

Umar (ra) narrated said that when the conditions became difficult for the people, and the prices of things increased, the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Be patient! I give you glad tidings, for I have made dua for blessing s on your measured and weighed items. Take your meals together. The food for one person will be enough for two and the food for two, will be enough for four, and the food for four, will be enough for five or six. There is blessing in unity and whomsoever shall stay in Madinah, in spite of hardship, I will be his witness and intercessor of the day of Judgment, and the one who leaves Madinah, Allah will replace him with somebody better and anyone who betrays the people of Madinah, Allah will dissolve him, like salt is dissolved in water.” [Majma uz zuwa’id]

Abu Hurarira (ra) narrated: “On seeing the first crop yield, the people would bring it to the Prophet (saw) and if the Prophet (saw) took it, he would say: ‘Oh Allah! Bless for us our city and bless for us our Sa’ and bless for us our Mudd. Oh Allah! Verily Ibraheem is your slave, Your Khalil (friend) and Your Prophet and he supplicated You for Al Madinah (to bless it with) the same as he supplicated for Makkah plus some again.’ Then he would call the youngest boy with him and give him that crop yield.” [Al Muslim]

2 Madinah expels evil people from it and retains good people. The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Al Madinah is like the bellows which expels its impurities and purifies what is good therein.” [Al Bukhary and Al Muslim]

“Verily it removes impurities just as fire removes impurities from silver.” [Al Muslim]

3Living in Madinah is superior than living anywhere else. The Messenger of allah (saw) said: “Madinah is better for them, if they but knew. By Him Whose Hand my life is in, none amongst them would go (out of the city) with a dislike for it, but Allah would make his successor in it someone better than him.” [Muslim]

Reported from Sa’d (as) said the Messenger (saw) said: “No one will remain constant in the face of hunger and meager income and hardship therein, except that I will be an intercessor or a witness for him on the day of Resurrection.” [Al Muslim]

4For the one who dies in Madinah, the Messenger of Allah (saw) has promised him intercession; “Let him who can, die in Madinah, for I shall intercede for those who die in it.” [Ahmad and At Tirmidhi]

5Punishment for those who oppress or plot against the people of Madinah. On the authority of Aa’ishah (ra), who heard Sa’d say: “I heard the Prophet of Allah (saw) say: “whoever plots against the people of Madinah, will dissolve as salt dissolves in water.’” [Al Bukhary]

And: “Whoever caused the people of Madinah to fear by oppressing them, Allah will cause them to fear and Allah’s curse will be upon them.” [Majma uz zuwa’id]

From those people, Allah’s curse will be upon them, nor will Allah accept their acts of worship. Jabir bin Abdullah (ra) narrated that the messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Whoever caused the people of Madinah to fear, the curse of Allah and that of the angels and all of the people is upon them; Allah will accept neither recompense nor compensation.” [An Nasa’i]

6 Blessings of the dates of Madinah is such that no harm will come to him. The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “Anyone who eats seven dates of Madinah early in the morning (before eating anything else), poison will not harm him.” [Al Muslim]

An specifically Ajwah dates, the Messenger (saw) said: “Whoever eats seven dates of Ajwa early in the morning, will not be effected by poison or magic that day.” [Al Bukhary]

7 The Dajjal cannot enter Madinah. Annas (ra) reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “There will be no town which Ad-Dajjal will not enter except Makkah and Medina, and there will be no entrance (road) (of both Makkah and Medina) but the angels will be standing in rows guarding it against him, and then Medina will shake with its inhabitants thrice (i.e. three earth-quakes will take place) and Allah will expel all the non-believers and the hypocrites from it.” [Al Bukhary]

Abu Hurayrah said, “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah (saw) said: ‘There are angels at the entries of Madinah, and neither plague nor the Dajjal will enter it.’” [Imam Malik's Muwatta]

Abu Bakr, narrated that the Prophet (saw) said: “The terror caused by Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal will not enter Madinah and at that time Madinah will have seven gates and there will be two angels at each gate guarding them.” [Al Bukhary]

8 The grave of our beloved Messenger (saw) is there. Abu Bakr (ra) heard the Prophet (saw) say: “A Prophet should not be buried except where he dies.” [Ahmad]

Thus, the Messenger of Allah (saw) was buried in the room of Aa’ishah (ra).

It is not permissible however, to make a journey solely for the purpose of visiting the Prophet’s (saw) grave, but the intention must be that of visiting Masjid An Nabawi, and thereafter visiting the grave of our beloved Messenger (saw).

9 The first Masjid that the Prophet (saw) built, Masjid Quba is in Madinah. Allah mentions it in the Qur’an: “Verily, the mosque whose foundation was laid from the first day on piety is more worthy that you stand therein (to pray.” [At Taubah]

Ibn Umar narrated: “The Prophet (saw) used to go to the Mosque of Quba (sometimes) walking and sometimes riding. Added Nafi (in another narration), “He then would offer two Rakah (in the Mosque of Quba).” [Al Bukhary]

Sahl bin Hunaif (ra) narrated that the Messenger of allah (saw) said: “Whoever went out until he came to this mosque, Masjid Quba and prayed therein, it (i.e the reward) would be equivalent performing Ummrah.” [Al Hakim]

10 Masjid An Nabawi in Madinah is the one of the three sacred places in the Islamic world.  The mosque is under the control of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. Abu Said Al-Khudri narrated that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, “Journeys may not be made (for visit) to any mosque but three: masjid Haram (Bayt Allah), my mosque (masjid Nabawi) and masjid Aqsa.” [Ahmed, Al Bukhari, A Muslim, Ibn e Majah]

The reward for praying in this mosque is far greater than praying in any other mosque, beside Masjid al Haraam.  Abu Hurairah (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: One salaah offered in my mosque is better than one thousand salaahs offered in other mosques, except Masjid al Haraam.” [Al Bukhary]

Many ahadeeth suggest that Madinah is inviolable. Trees and plants may not be cut and wildlife may not be hunted. . The Messenger (saw) said: “Its plants may not be cut down, nor may its game be chased, nor may lost property be picked up except by one who searches for its owner and it is not right that its trees be cut down, except so that a man may provide fodder for his camel.” [Abu Daawood]

Abdullah ibn Zaid bin Asm (ra) narrated that the prophet (saw) said : “Verily, Ibraheem declared Makkah as inviolable and supplicated for its inhabitants, and I declare Al Madinah to be inviolable as Ibraheem declared Makkah inviolable, and I have supplicated (Allah) to bless its Sa and its Mudd twice as Ibraheem did for the inhabitants of Makkah.” [Al Bukhary]

It can also be seen from the ahadeeth that anyone who commits a sin, whilst living in Madinah will be cursed. Reported by Ali ib Talib, that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said: “All of Madinah that lies between ‘Ayr and Thawr (mountains) is inviolable, so whoever commits a sin therein or gives sanctuary to a sinner therein, the curse of Allah and that of the angels and all of the people is upon him. And Allah will accept neither Sarf nor ‘Adl from him of the Day of Judgment.” [Al Bukhary]
