Al Baqi is the land on which the companions were buried. Aa’ishah (ra) said, that whenever it was her night with allah’s Messenger (saw), he would go out in the last part of the night to Al Baqi and say: “Assalaamu alaykum Oh bode of the believing people. What was promised to come to you tomorrow has come to you after some delay, and we, if Allah wills, will follow you; Oh Allah, forgive the people of Al Gharqad cemetery.” [Al Muslim and Ibn Hibban]
Ibn Umar (ra) narrated that Allah’s messenger (saw) said: “I am the first one for whom the earth will be cleft, then Abu Bakr, the Umar, then the inhabitants of Al Baqi and they will be gathered with me, then I will await the people of Makkah between the two holy mosques.” [At Tirmidhi and Al Hakim]
There are approximately ten thoudand companions of the prophet (saw) buried in Baqi. All of the Messenger’s (saw) children are buried there, (Fatimah (as), Ruqaiyah (ra), Umm Kulthum (ra), Zaynab and Ibraheem), except Al Qasim (ra).
Al Baqi was expanded twice during the Saudi era. The first being during the rein of King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz, and the second, during the rein of the custodian of the two holy mosques.
